The war took place in Vietnam. At the beginning of the war it was centered in South Vietnam. This is where the Republic of Vietnam (RVN) regime, which was supported by the United States, defended itself against Viet Cong rebellions supported by the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV). However, as the war went on, it expanded into North Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, who were on the borders of Vietnam.

After the Second World War has ended, the Soviet Union, also known as Russia today, developed as a superpower. Due to the Soviet Union being a superpower that supported communism, it had an influence over Eastern Europe and Asia. This caused the Iron curtain, described by Churchill, which separated the eastern block and the western block. The United States and the western block considered communism a threat to their democracy and cataplasm. In Vietnam, during 1945, the French had lost control of Vietnam, which they had invaded. It left Vietnam partitioned into north and South Korea, china, and the Soviet Union. This influenced communism into Vietnam heavily. As a result, a communist group called Viet Minh founded by a Vietnamese communist revolutionary leader Ho Chi Minh was created. In 1946, they took over North Vietnam to create the democratic republic of Vietnam. The United States and its western allies immediately backed Boa Dai to take over South Vietnam, creating the republic of Vietnam. This was because the United States was afraid that if Vietnam adopted a communist government, the whole Southeast Asia would fall into Communism. This is called the “Domino Effect” as described by President Dwight Eisenhower.
