Surprised, the British and French joined forces with Israel, who were banned from shipping through the Suez Canal, to reclaim the canal from Gamal Abdel Nasser. The plan of retaking the canal involved the Israelis striking first, on October 26 on the year of 1956. Approximately two days following, British and French military forces had participated on the attack. The United States had objected this attack as it feared communism spread through the arab states. The United States threatened the nations involved with economic penalty if they continued in their invasion. The American delegation of the United Nations had voted in favour of a resolution calling for an instant ceasefire and withdrawal of french, British and Israeli invading troops. In addition the USSR leader, Khrushchev “railed against the invasion and threatened to rain down nuclear missiles on Western Europe if the Israeli-French-British force did not withdraw”(Suez Crisis, n.a, para 6). Under Soviet, U.S., and U.N. pressure, Britain, Israel and France evacuated their forces in March 1957 and called for a ceasefire.
