RICHARD NIXON & EARLY LIFE Richard Milhous Nixon, born on January 9, 1913 in Yorba Linda, California. He was the second child amongst five other sons from a working class family. Richards father was Francis Anthony Nixon and mother Hannah Milhous Nixon who strived due to their financial issues that made them lose two of their sons from illness. Nixon had the privilege to attend a public school and later graduate from Whittier College which lead with Duke University to gain a law degree by 1937. He then worked for the federal government and the navy reserve during the time period of World War ll. American Politician, Nixon was elected to be the 37th President of the United States by 1969. Nixon managed to serve during the event of the Vietnam War that played a major role; as it pursued the strive of communism and democracy.
COLD WAR & INVOLVEMENT The United States had a disagreement with the Soviet Union during the time period of 1939 - 1945 due to allies and axis powers. They were constantly concerned about worldwide issues and did whatever to take part and action. An example would be The Cold War that occurred during 1945 - 1990 due to threats between countries and political hostility.
Richard Nixon played a major role as he not only served for the United States of America, but also foreign policy’s. He believed that creating violent methods of political and social support would increase the rate of communism within the country. Therefore renewing relationships with the Chinese and the Soviet Union would have them play against each other yet then both against the Vietnam war. The south Vietnamese war occurred at 1954 and lasted 20 years later by 1975. The United States played a significant role as they sent soldiers and weapons to defend the South from the North. Nixon came up with the “Vietnamization” strategy where the US "expand, equip, and train South Vietnam's forces and assign to them an ever-increasing combat role, at the same time steadily reducing the number of U.S. combat troops.” Immodestly this plan was introduced to the citizens of the states by 1969. Overall his aim was to improve the Vietnamese military defence which were capable of strengthening the South of Vietnam’s political base. By now, the “Vietnamization” strategy provided defence to the Southern Vietnamese towards any future threats. UPBRINGING EVENTS Richard knew that he was capable of having such an opportunity to work with them both the Chinese and the Soviet Union, which will force the Vietnam War to come to an end due to previous successful relations with Moscow and Beijing. This provided Richard Nixon with power and make the Chinese and the Soviet Union aware of how successful and developed the United States was. Overall Richards main intention was to reduce the amount of strain of the Cold War.
OPENINGS TO CHINA Nixon overcame conflicts with other territories to move on with his plans. Opening to the people’s republic of China allowed him to create a healthy relationship with Mao Zedong. Now the U.S. is aware of communist Chinese government. By 1972, Nixon visited China to meet Mao Zedong and discover landmarks in China. Nixon then granted the Chinese to be one of the memberships at the United Nations foundation. Therefore Richard Nixon renewed the United States relationship with China yet create developed connection to exchange diplomatic missions at the end of 1973.
CAMBODIAN ATTACK During the development of the Vietnamization strategy, the U.S. military defence played a major role at Cambodia and Southeast Asia. Richard Nixon attacked Cambodia with air force bombs and ground attacks. Nixon planned to invade Cambodia due to the fact that the Northern side of Vietnam stored their troops and battling supplies in Cambodia. He believed that incursions on Cambodia will have the Vietnamization plan on going. Therefore attacking Cambodia allowed him to add pressure on the North Vietnam. This allowed the U.S. to appear as a successful territory that had the proper amount of knowledge, supplies and technology. This defence lasted for 3 years yet killed 100,000 casualties. To conclude, not only did the U.S. have a great reputation due to previous relations, yet they were difficult to attack and ambush against. This is because they attacked two different territories at the same time therefore they were known as the successful territory.
SIGNIFICANCE & IMPACT To sum this up, Richard Nixon had a lasting impact on the Cold War and the future of the world in both negative and positive ways. Not only did he defeat the North of Vietnam, his nuclear arms control agreement with the Soviet Union, he also managed to renew the U.S. relation with China after visiting Mao Zedong. Lastly invading Cambodia was one his plans in order to have the Vietnamization strategy be successful. All of the following reasons were strategy done by Richard Nixon to end the Cold War. However Richard did keep everything private before revealing it to the world. A few of the distinctive acts he did would be signing agreements, attending suspicious meetings and attacking lands suddenly such as Cambodia. Although thousands of innocent U.S. citizens were drawn into these actions therefore many lives were lost. Due to these decisions made by Richard Nixon, he allowed the U.S. to have full power to defeat and control other countries. He supplied the U.S. with courage and capability to be seen as a significant way worldwide.
